Canada to Adopt ELDs

Transport Canada announced yesterday that Canada will follow the US mandate and require the use of ELDs for tracking driver hours. This decision was made after years of review and found that it will improve safety, eliminate fraud, and significantly reduce paperwork.

Although minimal details have been released, Transport Canada stated they will align with the FMCSA’s December 2017 timeline. It is unknown if the same criteria will be used for what is considered an ELD or if there will similar exemptions, or any at all.

This past year saw a lot of changes in the trucking industry, particularly with the regulations. The ELD Mandate was finally published after being scheduled and rescheduled throughout 2015. Although the use of ELDs is not effective immediately due to the grace periods, it will definitely have a huge impact over the next coming years.

American Moving & Storage Association Applies for Exemption From 14-Hour Rule

Should drivers of moving trucks be allowed to drive past the 14th hour? The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) thinks so and has applied to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for a special exemption from regulations prohibiting drivers from piloting their commercial vehicles past the 14th hour on duty.
