Sitting’s the New Smoking: What Does That Mean For Truckers?

Truckers getting activeSitting down: it’s one thing truckers do more than virtually anybody else. When you’re spending as much as 11 hours of your day driving, it’s easy to see why so little time is spent on a physical activity.

And that’s cause for concern, since several recent studies have shown that sitting for extended periods of time can lead to cardiovascular problems, weight gain, depression, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and even premature death. Researchers behind one recent study concluded that “higher amounts of daily total sitting time are associated with greater risk of all-cause mortality and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity appears to attenuate [lessen] the hazardous association.”

Carrier Revenues to “Grow Steadily” in 2015, Report Says

A new report predicts that 2015 will be the United States freight industry’s best year since 2007. Should the prediction prove accurate, it could bode very well for carriers but not quite so well for others.

truckThe report, which is now available through auditing company Cass Information Systems, comes from industry expert Rosayln Wilson. Wilson, who writes the annual “State of Logistics Report,” predicts that both volumes and carrier revenues will “grow steadily” this year, giving many commercial transportation firms bigger profit margins than they’ve seen in nearly a decade.

Truck Drivers Join Fight Against Human Trafficking

Truckers in the great state of Iowa are joining in the fight against human trafficking. A Cedar Rapids-based group is now working with the Iowa Department of Transportation and local truck drivers to identify this kind of criminal activity.

Human trafficking is the trade of human beings, often for sexual slavery or forced labor. Those targeted by traffickers are often shipped thousands of miles from home to engage in illicit activities. In essence, victims of human trafficking are slaves.

Obama Administration Opens Border to Mexican Truck Drivers

The United States Department of Transportation has announced that Mexican truckers are now eligible to carry out lengthy journeys through the U.S. The decision is expected to garner criticism from American truckers who have fought the measure since the completion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) more than two decades ago.
