Questions & Answers

Q. How will this impact drivers who are exempt from the ELD mandate? Will they need to use a special logbook to track HOS?
A.
It’s important to remember that just because you are exempt from using an ELD, doesn’t mean you are exempt from tracking your hours-of-service (HOS). If you are currently required to track your HOS but are exmpt from using an ELD, you will still need to track HOS using either paper logs, an electronic logbook, or even an ELD. Some exempt drivers actually choose to use ELDs because they can see how much easier it makes completing their logs.

Q. Will ELDs cause a reduction in owner-operators and an increase in rates?
A. An ELD doesn’t change the hours-of-service rules themselves or the time you have available to drive. It’s just a different way of tracking them. ELDs level the playing field, since everyone will be held to the same rules, so it should create consisency across the board.

When we first heard about the ELD mandate, a lot of truckers threatened to quit. Now, we’re seeing in publications like CCJ, that owner-operators haven’t seen a reduction in compensation. There hasn’t been a significant drop in owner-operators either, people still need to work, and people still need truckers! In fact, we’re hearing from a lot of owner-operators and drivers who already have ELDs installed that now that they’ve tried it andthey like it! They are able to free time spent completing paper logs and are seeing some efficiency in their business.

Q. If I’m signed up with BigRoad’s DashLink before the mandate deadline, will I be able to run it as an AOBRD until 2019?
A. BigRoad’s DashLink can be installed and used as an AOBRD until the extension deadline of December 16, 2019. When you are ready to make the move to a more restrictive ELD (before the December 16, 2019 deadline), it can be done with a simple software update. No new hardware is required. Once you have DashLink installed you can make this switch anytime – either wait until December 2019, or sooner, depending on your comfort level.
