Questions & Answers

Q. Does BigRoad offer IFTA reporting? Does it include roads traveled?
A. When you use BigRoad’s DashLink, you’ll have access to your state-by-state mileage reporting that you can use to facilitate your IFTA reports. The report tracks how many miles you’ve driven in each state, not the specific roads you took. However, if you are interested in a map of your route to see exactly which roads you or your drivers took, you can access that from inside the BigRoad Web App.

Q. Can you elaborate on AOBRDs vs ELDs?
A. The FMCSA is allowing vehicles equipped with automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs) prior to the December 18, 2017 deadline to continue to use them for an additional two years, until December 16 2019. This is great news for a lot of people, because AOBRDs are less heavily regulated than ELDs and therefore offer more flexibility. With an AOBRD an administrator can make some corrections to the logs on the back end, including vehicle location, duty status, and drive time when it is done in error. With an ELD, these edits are not permissible. There is also more information recorded and displayed in an ELD than there is when using an AOBRD.

With BigRoad’s DashLink, you can choose which compliance option suits your needs. Our DashLink is an ELD-ready AOBRD. So when you receive it, it will be an AOBRD, and you can easily update it to an ELD with a free software update from inside the app. You can make the change immediately upon installation, or you can wait until December 2019. Remember, in order to use an AOBRD in compliance with the ELD mandate, you need to have it installed before December 18 2017.

Q. Can I use the BigRoad Mobile App to be compliant with the ELD mandate?
A. To be compliant to with ELD mandate, the FMCSA specifies that you need an engine-connected device. That means that although the BigRoad Mobile App is a great tool to replace your paper logbooks and make logging easier, by itself it is not a compliance solution. In order to comply with the ELD mandate, you need an AOBRD or an ELD, which are either plugged in or hardwired to a vehicle. DashLink is a great option because it is plug-and-play, so it can be installed by you in minutes – there is no need for expensive installation or a permanent vehicle change. The device is easily transferable between drivers and fleets.

Q. How far can I drive before the ELD starts generating my daily log, or kicks me into on-duty driving?
A. The rule specifies the speed, rather than the distance you need to drive. According to the FMCSA, an ELD needs to automatically switch to driving mode once the vehicle is moving 5 miles per hour.

Q. What is the last date before I can be fined for not having an ELD? What are the fines?
A. You can be fined starting December 18 2017, but will not be put out of service until April 1 2018 if you don’t have a compliance solution in place. Before April 1st, you will be subject to citations and violations that will not count against your CSA score but they are rumored to be substantial. The exact fines have yet to be published, but we’re hearing they will be around $500. Or, you can pay between $234-$300 and guarantee your compliance for 15 months — it’s up to you if it’s worth the risk! Keep in mind that if you are caught without a compliance solution during an inspection, you might be facing even more scrutiny from an officer, who might look for other ways to cite you.

Q. What are the costs?
A. Our DashLink ELD compliance solution is $19.50/unit/month for owner-operators or $25/unit/month for fleets of 3 or more. The reason for this is that owner-operators require less back-end functionality than fleets do, and so they aren’t paying for features they don’t use. For all new customers who pay up front for one year, we’ll give you an additional 3 months added to your contract for free! That’s 15 months for the price of 12.
