Questions & Answers

Q. How do I add a truck?
A: You can no longer add trucks via the BigRoad Mobile App. To add a truck, a Safety Manager needs to login to the BigRoad Web App. Check out this video and how-to document for detailed instructions! You must add the truck before a driver can connect to the DashLink device in their vehicle. If your drivers are having trouble connecting to DashLink, make sure their truck has been added. This is one of the first things you should check.

Q: Do I need to add new trucks as ELD?
A: Yes. Any trucks that are added as of December 18, 2017 must be added as ELD vehicles. There are 3 steps to turn on ELD functionality:

  1. Check the ELD Readiness Report
We’ve created this short video and how-to document to help you out.
  2. Turn on ELD functionality for your fleet
See how to do this here. Note:
This will not automatically switch all of your trucks over to ELD. You must do this on an individual, truck-by-truck basis after you’ve completed this step.
  3. Add new trucks as ELD vehicles and/or switch existing trucks over to ELD
You can do this on a truck-by-truck basis in the BigRoad Web App. The last page of this document shows you how to do this.

NOTE: If you had a DashLink installed in your vehicle before December 18, 2017, you are allowed to continue running it as an automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD) until December 16, 2019 if you choose to. You can also choose to switch your truck to ELD now. Any new trucks added as of December 18, 2017 must be added as ELD vehicles.

Q: Do I need to be running on the newest version of BigRoad on my mobile device?
A: Yes. It’s very important that you are running the latest version of the BigRoad Mobile App! Right now this is version 21.0.17. Things will run the most smoothly if you’ve got the app up to date. To update your app, click on the iTunes icon (if you have an Apple device) or the Google Play Store icon (if you have an Android device). There will be a red icon in your updates section indicating that an update is necessary.

Q: What do I have to do if my DashLink is malfunctioning?
A: Your first step should be to check our DashLink Troubleshooting Guide. This document goes over some common issues and explains how to fix them. If this doesn’t work, there are 3 steps you should take:

  1. Switch over to paper logs.
  2. Call BigRoad Support at 1-888-305-8777 Ext. 1 to troubleshoot the issue.
  3. If the malfunction can’t be resolved, call your carrier within 24 hours to provide written notice of the malfunction. In the meantime, BigRoad will send you a new DashLink. You have 8 days to resolve the issue. If more time is required, contact your State FMCSA Administrator to let them know what’s going on.

Q: Should I unplug my DashLink if I have a lot of violations?
A: No! Do NOT unplug your DashLink if you have violations. This will not clear the violations. If your violation was a mistake (ie: you accidentally put yourself into On Duty Driving), contact your Administrator. They will be able to fix your drive time and make a note of the error. If you’re seeing violations that you believe are malfunctions, please contact our Support Team at 1-888-305-8777 Ext. 1 or [email protected].

Q: If I choose to add a truck as ‘eLog’, is it compliant with the ELD mandate?
A:
No. All new trucks added as of December 18, 2017 must be added as ELD vehicles. Trucks added as eLog vehicles won’t be compliant with the ELD mandate. An eLog vehicle is just using the BigRoad Mobile App electronic logbook with no DashLink. Only people who are exempt from the ELD mandate should be using eLogs.

Q: How do I complete a roadside inspection with ELD?
A:
You’ll be inspected based on the configuration of the truck you’re currently driving. If you’re driving a truck that’s configured as AOBRD, you’ll be inspected as AOBRD. If you’re driving a truck that’s configured as ELD, you’ll be inspected as ELD.

You have 3 options during a roadside inspection: Officer writing a roadside inspection

  1. Send to FMCSA
  2. Inspect on screen
  3. Send/Print logs

Read over this short how to guide to learn more.

Q: Does ELD support carrier edits?
A:
Yes! Once your ELD logs are submitted, carriers can suggest edits to them and submit these edits to the driver for approval. When a carrier suggests an edit to a driver, the driver is notified the next time they login to the BigRoad Mobile App. They are prompted to review a pending edit and can either approve or reject it. If the driver rejects the edit, they will be required to include a response indicating why it was rejected. Carrier edits are available to both fleets using DashLink as an AOBRD and those using it as an ELD. We recommend that all fleets enable carrier edits to ensure audit compliance. Check out this how-to guide to learn more.

Q: How do I manage unidentified driving with ELD?
A:
Unidentified driving occurs when a DashLink-equipped vehicle is recognized as driving, but no driver is logged in through the BigRoad Mobile App. After unidentified driving has been recorded on a truck, it can be reviewed by the future driver of that truck. This driver can then assign themselves the driving (claim it) or leave it for the next driver to review (reject it). Fleet managers are able to see which trucks have unidentified driving time that has not been claimed and suggest which driver(s) should claim it. Read this helpful how-to document to learn more.

Q: How do I change truck, trailer, and shipping docs?
A:
Nothing is different when it comes to changing trucks. You can still do this through the menu button in the BigRoad Mobile App. However, we’ve added a new option for changing trailer information and shipping docs. This can now be done through the main dashboard view in the BigRoad Web App, the HOS screen, or the header section of the current day’s log within the BigRoad Mobile App. To learn more, check out this how-to document.
