Q. What’s the difference between an ELD and AOBRD? Is an AOBRD still compliant with the ELD mandate?
Automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs) are similar to electronic logging devices (ELDs) in that they connect to a vehicle’s engine to record data that is used to create a driver’s log. The real difference between AOBRDs and ELDs is that AOBRDs record and display a lot less data. For example, an ELD will record your location at several different points: from log in, to engine start, to every 60 minutes while driving. In contrast, an AOBRD only records your location during duty status changes.

In addition, AOBRDs offer more flexibility when it comes to editing driver logs. Edits with ELDs very limited, with every change recorded. As a result, AOBRDs are a great option for fleets looking to ease their drivers into engine-connected logging.

Lastly, AOBRDs are compliant with the ELD mandate. If your fleet gets them before December 18, 2017, you can continue to use them until December 17, 2019. After December 17, 2019, all fleets and drivers using AOBRDs must transition to ELDs. Also, please note that you cannot purchase an AOBRD after December 18, 2017.

Q. With BigRoad do I have a choice of going with either an AOBRD or an ELD?
A. Our DashLink ELD can operate as an AOBRD. If you implement DashLink before December 18, 2017, it will qualify for the grandfather clause, allowing your fleet to continue using it as an AOBRD for additional two years! If you get DashLink before the mandate deadline, you can choose when to switch over to ELDs at any time during the two year extension period. Our device is easily upgraded with a simple software download. If you do not get DashLink before December 18, you will only have the option of using it as an ELD.

Q. Are you certified with the FMCSA?
We has submitted all the documentation to the FMCSA to self-certify our DashLink ELD. They are currently reviewing it and we should be on the list any day now!

Q. What is the cost per user?
A. It is $15 per month for a license and $10 per month for our DashLink ELD. For a single driver/single asset that works out to roughly $25 per month.
