Time’s Running Out! 5 Reasons Why You Need an ELD Now, Not Later

5 REASONS YOU NEED AN ELD NOW (NOT LATER) Blog BannerDo you have an ELD mandate compliance solution yet? If you’re still holding out and waiting to comply, you are cutting it pretty close to the deadline! With less than 8 weeks left to comply, it’s time to get on board.

Using an engine-connected solution will be big adjustment for you. But there are clear advantages of getting on board now, before it’s too late. Here are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t wait any longer to get an electronic logging device (ELD) solution.

1. The Deadline is Looming

December 18 ELD Compliance DeadlineThe ELD mandate was published in December 2015, and finalized in February 2016. They introduced a two-year implementation period in order to give drivers and fleets enough time to get comfortable with connected logging, before making the switch. Now there are just weeks left until the mandate deadline, so it’s time to make your final decision.

You might have heard a rumour that is circulating that they won’t actually be enforcing ELDs for another 6 or 12 months — I’ve even heard people say two years! Sadly, that is not the case. The truth is, the FMCSA has said that they will not be giving drivers out-of-service (OOS) violations for not having a certified ELD solution until April 2018. However, they will still issue citations and fines for not having an ELD beginning on December 18, 2017, so this doesn’t mean you are off the hook!

2. Take Advantage of the AOBRD Extension While You Can!

AOBRD Grandfather Extension ClauseDid you know that an ELD isn’t your only option? If you want to maintain some flexibility, an automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD) is your best bet! If you transition before the December 18, 2017 mandate deadline, you will be able to take advantage of the 2-year AOBRD extension. AOBRDs offer some more flexibility than ELDs, and if you get one before the mandate deadline, you can continue to use it as such until December 16, 2019. However, if you don’t get an AOBRD before the 2017 deadline, you’ll miss the opportunity as vendors cannot sell them past December 18th of this year.

BigRoad’s DashLink is an ELD-ready AOBRD. That means if you purchase and install a DashLink today, you can use it now as an AOBRD. When you are ready to become fully ELD compliant, so by December 16 2019, or sooner, you can switch with a simple software update from inside the app. There is no additional cost, or need to swap hardware!

3. Get 3 MONTHS FREE!
Save Money On ELDs By Getting 3 Months Free!Another great reason to get an ELD mandate solution now, is that you can take advantage of BigRoad’s 3 For Free deal!

If you purchase a DashLink now on a one-year term, paid upfront, we’ll give you 3 additional months for free! That means you will be getting 15 months for the price of 12. Which works out to be just $15.60/device/month for 1-2 truck operations, and $20/device/month for fleets with 3 or more trucks. Achieving ELD compliance has never been more affordable than it is with BigRoad!

4. Get Ahead of Supply and Demand Issues
Warehouse stocking ELDsYou might have heard that there could be a supply and demand issue as the mandate deadline gets closer, where demand for devices will be greater than the number of devices available. We’ve already heard that some of our competitors are already back-ordered for their ELDs and it’s going to take an extra 3+ weeks – on top of their regular 1-2 week shipping time – to receive your device. If we are currently less than 3 weeks out until the mandate, that will mean you have just a couple of weeks to order your device through them if you want to be compliant in time for the mandate!

This is especially concerning if you plan on taking advantage of the AOBRD extension. BigRoad has done some careful and thorough planning to avoid this supply and demand issue, and our devices are able to be shipped quickly to you. However, we are seeing a dramatic spike in the amount of orders we are receiving, so to be extra sure you will receive yours in time, don’t hesitate to place your order now!

5. Benefit From Using an Engine-Connected Device
Owner-OperatorTransitioning to ELDs seems daunting for a lot of people, but there are actually quite a few benefits to using them. Drivers who use paper logs can eliminate the hassle of paperwork, saving both time and money! ELDs automatically create clean logs, which means there will be no more form-and-manner errors – saving  time on inspections and money on easily preventable fines.

Because of the clean logs that connected-logging devices create, having an ELD solution can have a “wave-through” effect on inspections. Many BigRoad customers have commented that when an inspector sees the BigRoad sticker on their truck, they wave them right through their inspections because they are familiar with BigRoad and can trust that they are running in compliance. The bulletproof logs that ELDs create result in less violations, and therefore a healthier CSA score – which can further benefit your operation by attracting more brokers, and even lowering your insurance rates.
