Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) have taken another step towards becoming a reality. Back in March, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that they would be mandating the use of ELDs. Now the FMCSA is reviewing the registration process for approved devices with potential vendors (like BigRoad), which means they are well on their way to finalizing this rule.
The ELD mandate will require all truck drivers and motorcoach drivers who keep records of their Hours of Service (HOS) duty statuses to use electronic logs connected to the vehicle’s engine. It is proposed that the device be inoperable by the driver while driving and also tamper-resistant. This is a critical part of the required hardware specifications that all manufactuers must meet.
Once the review is complete the FMCSA should be accepting registrations for devices that meet federal requirements and listing them on their website. The mandate is expected to be finalized in 2017.
