Mark your calendars! It’s that time of the year again. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will be conducting their annual International Roadcheck program on June 4-6. Are you ready?

Avoid being caught off-guard and placed out of service (OOS). Here is what you need to prepare for that 72-hour period in 2019.

Steering and Suspension Emphasis

While your vehicle compliance is always on the priority list of the North American Standard Inspection Program, CVSA will also be focusing on your steering components and suspension systems in effort to support highway safety.

“Steering and suspension are safety critical systems for any commercial motor vehicle,” said CVSA President Chief Jay Thompson with the Arkansas Highway Police. “Not only do they support the heavy loads carried by trucks and buses, but they also help maintain stability and control under acceleration and braking, keeping the vehicle safely on the road. Furthermore, they keep tires in alignment, reducing chances of uneven tire wear and possible tire failure, and they maximize the contact between the tires and the road to provide steering stability and good handling.”

What to Expect During International Roadcheck?

During the three-day inspection blitz, inspectors primarily conduct North American Standard Level I Inspections. A Level I Inspection is a 37-step procedure that examines the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and the driver. The vehicle inspection includes a review of operating and mechanical components including the following:

• Brake system
• Exhaust and fuel systems
• Frame, trailer bodies, and suspension
• Tires, wheels, rims, hubs, and steering mechanisms
• Driveline/driveshaft components
• Lighting devices

Be also prepared that inspectors might want to conduct a Level II Inspection that involves a walk-around the vehicle, Level III for administrative diligence or Level V that is vehicle only.

And make sure your driver’s record of duty status and reports are spick-n-span! You might be asked to provide:

• Commercial driver license (CDL)
• Medical examiner’s certificate (if applicable)
• Hours-of-service documentation and record of duty status (RODS) in a compliant format – paper logbook, electronic logbook, automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD), or electronic logging device (ELD)

International Roadcheck is a CVSA program with participation by FMCSA, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada and Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) (Ministry of Communications and Transportation) of Mexico.
