ELD – What it Means for Canadians

Copy_of_FEBRUARY_POLL_10.png

In early February, Transport Canada announced that Canada will follow a similar legislation to the FMCSA ELD mandate that passed in the United States last year. To date, there has been limited information released about the proposed “Canadian ELD mandate”. However, many Canadian trucking associations have publicly expressed their support of ELDs – and for good reason!

Why Canadians Should Make the Switch to ELDs
After years of research, the Canadian government is prepared to implement changes in the trucking industry. Canadian drivers will be required to electronically record their hours of service (HOS) – marking the first major change to logging practices since mandating paper logs (which have been used since the 1930s).

ELDs and electronic logs, such as the BigRoad Mobile App, offer many benefits to drivers and fleets that enable them to improve operations, reduce costs, and retain drivers. It’s not worth the wait – here are some reasons you should consider transitioning today:

  1. US_Border.jpgDriving in the United States? You’ll Need an ELD!
The ELD mandate has already been passed in the United States and the timeline for adoption has been released. This mandate requires commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers in the U.S. to use an ELD to record their record of duty status (RODS).

All CMV drivers, unless they meet an exemption, are required to comply. Drivers currently using paper logs or electronic logging software must transition to ELD no later than December 18, 2017. Drivers currently using AOBRDs, prior to the compliance date, must transition to ELDs no later than December 16, 2019. This means, that if you’re travelling across the border into the U.S., you’ll need to be using an ELD anyways!

  2. You’ve Got Limited Time to Make a Decision
bigroad-dashlink-300x287.pngAs reported, Canada will follow a similar timeline to the U.S. ELD mandate. If that’s the case, you’ve got limited time to make a decision on how you’re going to transition and which device you’re going to use! A complete ELD timeline can be found on our website.

By starting the conversation and search now, you’re giving yourself time to research, watch product demos, and potentially trial some ELDs to determine which one best meets your needs.

Transitioning early will allow your fleet to adopt the technology at a pace that’s right for you including time to properly train staff to ensure they’re comfortable and develop usage guidelines.

  3. Improve Your Safety Score Now
Switching to an ELD now will enable you to eliminate violations and effectively improve your safety score. If you’re one of the last people to switch, you’ll never be able to catch up to your competitors that opted to adopt ELDs earlier. The longer you wait, the harder it’ll be for you to improve!
