Carrier Revenues to “Grow Steadily” in 2015, Report Says

A new report predicts that 2015 will be the United States freight industry’s best year since 2007. Should the prediction prove accurate, it could bode very well for carriers but not quite so well for others.

truckThe report, which is now available through auditing company Cass Information Systems, comes from industry expert Rosayln Wilson. Wilson, who writes the annual “State of Logistics Report,” predicts that both volumes and carrier revenues will “grow steadily” this year, giving many commercial transportation firms bigger profit margins than they’ve seen in nearly a decade.

Sitting’s the New Smoking: What Does That Mean For Truckers?

Truckers getting activeSitting down: it’s one thing truckers do more than virtually anybody else. When you’re spending as much as 11 hours of your day driving, it’s easy to see why so little time is spent on a physical activity.

And that’s cause for concern, since several recent studies have shown that sitting for extended periods of time can lead to cardiovascular problems, weight gain, depression, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and even premature death. Researchers behind one recent study concluded that “higher amounts of daily total sitting time are associated with greater risk of all-cause mortality and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity appears to attenuate [lessen] the hazardous association.”

Telematics Improving Productivity, Saving Carriers Money

New research shows that the switch to telematics-based systems is improving the efficiency of many commercial transportation companies.

Telematics systems involve placing a wireless device — usually a little black box — inside a vehicle (typically, it connects to the diagnostic port). The device can then transmit information about the vehicle and the way it’s being driven to a carrier, insurance company, or other party.

Usage-Based Insurance: Could it Make the Highway Safer?

young-driversTruckers know it as well as anyone: young drivers are often aggressive, easily distracted, and too frequently pose a threat to commercial vehicle operators. But now there’s some good news: a new strategy, called usage-based insurance, could make highways safer for everyone.

Usage-based insurance (UBI) is becoming a more and more popular concept. Essentially, it involves using wireless technology to track a driver’s behavior — from how fast they accelerate to how rapid they brake and corner — to determine how much they should pay for car insurance.

Proposed Law Would Allow Truckers to Carry Guns State to State

Should truckers be allowed to carry firearms in their commercial vehicles from state to state? The mother of a trucker slain in Detroit believes so.

In June 2014 the body of Mike Boeglin, a 30-year-old resident of Ferdinand Indiana, was found in the burned out shell of his truck. Boeglin, who was preparing to become a father for the first time, had been shot several times before his commercial vehicle was set on fire. Boeglin was in Detroit delivering aluminum coils to a ThyssenKrupp steel plant. He called his wife shortly before midnight and thereafter parked at an abandoned sports complex not far from his destination.
