Previously we’ve looked at the importance of keeping apps up-to-date on your phone or tablet but another question our support team comes across daily is, “How much data does the BigRoad app use?”
Although BigRoad is designed to use as little data as possible, it all depends on how you are using your mobile device — the more you use it, the more data it will use it. If you plan to stay in the USA or Canada then a monthly 1GB plan should give you an adequate amount of data. You might want to consider a larger data plan if you regularly stream videos, audio, send a lot of photos or do a lot of web browsing on your device
If however you are making regular cross-border trips you might want to check with your mobile provider to make sure you are not in for a nasty shock from data roaming charges.
What is Data Roaming?
Data roaming occurs when you are outside of your carrier’s coverage area and your device connects to another network. Although you can continue to use services like internet and email, data transmitted this way can be very expensive. In just a few days, you could be paying triple or more what you normally pay monthly.
Most major carriers now have affordable options for frequent cross-border travellers, so be proactive when it comes to your data and travel plans.
Even when your carrier says they offer roaming in another country make sure it actually covers the area you are visiting. Make sure you understand what services are included and what the limits of those services are.
