Questions & Answers
Q. What log editing can be done on an ELD or AOBRD?
A. With an electronic logging device (ELD), you can’t change anything that has been automatically recorded. From the web application, there are a few very limited edits that you or an administrator will be able to make, but they will need to be annotated and visible during an inspection.

For example, you may change your status from “off-duty” to “on-duty not driving” with a note that explains that you logged training time incorrectly as off-duty. The edit and annotation would need to be verified by you from inside the BigRoad Mobile App. The edit is not accepted until you confirm it from the mobile app and resubmit your record of duty status.

However, with an automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD) you can still edit your vehicle location and make some changes to an event. You can adjust your duty status from on-duty to off, or from on-duty driving to personal conveyance or yard move. And again, BigRoad’s DashLink can be used as an AOBRD or an ELD when you are ready to make the transition.

Q. If I have an electronic logbook app on my phone, will that be compliant?
A. Although electronic logbooks (eLogs) make hours-of-service (HOS) tracking and compliance easier, it’s important to understand that they are not an ELD-mandate compliant solution.

In section 395.2 of the ELD mandate, the FMCSA states that an ELD “must be integrally synchronized with specific operations of the motor vehicle in which it is installed.” This means that it must be engine-connected, which an electronic logbook is not. Engine-connected AOBRDs and ELDs can connect to an app in order to communicate with and complete the automated logs, but the app alone is not enough to achieve compliance after December 18 2017.

Q. Do devices need to be hardwired to trucks? Is there a way we can install a device to use on multiple trucks?
A. ELDs are not required to be hardwired to your CMV. BigRoad’s DashLink ELD is a plug-and-play solution that you can install by yourself in minutes. It simply plugs into your vehicle’s ECM and connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth, making it easily transferable between drivers and fleets.
